Seam Shadows on Quartzite Countertops

Fabricators and restoration contractors have been experiencing a frustrating issue with quartzite countertops, where the seams appear to darken over time. This phenomenon has been observed when using polyester glue or silicone to join the pieces of quartzite together.

One possible reason is caused by the resin content within the quartzite. When the glue or silicone is applied to the seam, it reacts with the resin and causes a chemical reaction that results in the darkening effect. While this may not happen immediately after installation, over time, the seams begin to show signs of discoloration, which can be unsightly and undermine the aesthetic appeal of the countertop.

Another cause is when certain dyes and coloring tints are added to the polyester. Due to the porous nature of quartzite these dyes can bled into the stone causing this darken effect. Certain polyester without dye can sometimes cause this darkening as well.

One potential solution to this problem is to use an epoxy-based adhesive instead of polyester glue or silicone. Epoxy adhesives are less reactive with the resin in the quartzite, which can reduce the risk of discoloration occurring. Additionally, epoxy is a stronger adhesive than polyester glue or silicone, providing a more durable bond between the pieces of quartzite.

Another possible solution is to use a special type of silicone that is formulated to be more compatible with quartzite. These types of silicone adhesives are designed to have a lower level of reactivity with the resin content in the quartzite, reducing the likelihood of discoloration occurring.

It is important to note that prevention is key when it comes to avoiding darkening along the seams of quartzite countertops. Fabricators and restoration contractors should be diligent in their efforts to clean the countertop thoroughly before applying any adhesive. Any residual dirt, dust, or debris can exacerbate the chemical reaction and increase the risk of discoloration occurring.

While the issue of darkening seams on quartzite countertops can be frustrating, there are solutions available to mitigate this problem. By using Clear epoxy-based adhesives (do not add any dye) or special types of silicone, as well as ensuring the countertop is clean and free of debris, fabricators and restoration contractors can help ensure a flawless installation and maintain the aesthetic appeal of the countertop for years to come.
