Terrazzo Expansion Joint Failure

Terrazzo Expansion Joint Failure

Problem
A terrazzo floor in an airport was chipping and coming out in pieces.

Investigation
This expansion joint bridged two sections of the building. The terrazzo on one side appeared higher than the other. A sounding test showed that the terrazzo had delaminated in several places.

Conclusions
It was determined that the expansion joint was not installed properly and was not leveled. Baggage and foot traffic that would hit the high side had caused it to chip.

Summary and Solution
Stone Forensics recommended that the expansion joint be replaced and prepared a detailed specification for replacement.
